Environment Canada: rainfall warning and special weather statement for eastern N.S.

Very wet and windy weather is in the forecast for parts of the province, including Cape Breton.

Environment Canada says periods of heavy rain and strong winds are possible over eastern Nova Scotia as an intense low-pressure system heads northeastward towards Atlantic Canada.

A rainfall warning is issued for Richmond and Cape Breton counties and Sydney Metro where they could get 40 to 60 mm or more from Thursday evening to Friday evening.

A special weather statement is in effect for Guysborough, Inverness and Victoria counties calling for as much as 40 mm of rain and strong winds.

Rainfall and wind warnings may be issued for other areas if the system tracks farther west.

The forecaster advises that heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

Eastern Newfoundland is expected to get the worst of the system, with up to 100 mm in some areas.
