19-year-old woman dead after crash outside of Sydney

A 19-year-old woman is dead after a car crash in Cape Breton.

Around 11 p.m. on Saturday, police say a Honda Civic rolled over into a ditch and broke a power pole across from an Irving Oil gas station outside of Sydney, in Howie Centre.

Two passengers were thrown from the car and the driver was trapped inside, according to a news release from Cape Breton Regional Police.

EHS transported a 19-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man to Cape Breton Regional Hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead.

The man is still in the hospital with what police believe are non-life-threatening injuries, according to the release.

Firefighters had to pry the car open to get the 18-year-old driver out, who was airlifted to Halifax with serious injuries. Police say he’s in critical condition.

Kings Road was closed for several hours as police were on the scene, speaking to witnesses and collecting evidence. A collision reconstructionist and the traffic unit were also on the scene. Nova Scotia Power has since replaced the broken power pole.

The investigation continues.
