The province’s incoming opposition leader welcomes a federal tax break on groceries.
But the NDP’s Claudia Chender says Premier Tim Houston’s government can go a step further.
Chender wants Houston to take the tax off groceries permanently.
She says people are having a hard time covering their monthly bills.
“When we know that food insecurity is higher in Nova Scotia than anywhere else, this is an easy thing the government can do to jump on this federal tax break and help even more people with their grocery bills,” said Chender.
Chender adds there are record contributions to food banks, and families need help.
The federal tax break starts December 14.
It will eliminate the GST on groceries and some other items until February.
