The province says the decision to replace Judge Warren Zimmer was not made lightly.
Zimmer had been leading the inquiry into Lionel Desmond, the Afghan war vet who killed his wife, mother, daughter and himself in 2017.
In a statement, the Department of Justice says there were four extensions on the Inquiry, the most recent one ended on June 30th.
The extensions allowed the Judge to sit beyond the age of 75.
They said Zimmer was offered additional resources, but they were declined, and there were no assurances that a report was coming.
The inquiry was called five years ago, and it’s been over a year since final submissions were made.
The Chief Judge of the Provincial Court has appointed a new Judge to continue the work.
The department says their only focus is to provide the families with the answers they need as quickly as possible.
Liberal leader Zach Churchill says the province has interfered in an independent judicial process.
