NS floods: a summer’s worth of rain in 24 hours

Historic rainfall totals for Nova Scotia.

About 3 months worth of rain fell in a 24-hour span Friday afternoon into Saturday.

Environment Canada meteorologist Bob Robichaud said despite the rainfall warnings, it was hard to predict exact totals.

“We also mentioned the tropical moisture in our weather warnings. Whenever that happens, we always get varying amounts of precipitation,” said Robichaud.

He says in Halifax, some areas got north of 200 millimeters of rain, while other parts of the city had only 10 millimetres.

Bridgewater received 260 millimetres of rain, while Bedford and Lower Sackville got around 230.

He says some areas in West Hants got even more rain.

Robichaud said they’ve seen plenty of rain and plenty of lightning before, but that much all at once in the same area is rare.
