Historic ruling orders Ottawa to pay $23B to First Nation children and families

A federal court judge has ordered a landmark settlement for 300,000 First Nations children and their families that will top $23 billlon.

The historic ruling gives back money for decades of underfunding of on-reserve child-welfare services.

It comes more than 15 years a joint human rights complaint was filed in 2007.

The settlement is the largest in Canadian history and was based on a human rights tribunal ruling which found the federal government discriminated against First Nation children and their families.
