A night filled with candy, creepy costumes and time with friends is upon us.
But police want to ensure that everyone gets home safely on this Halloween night.
Cpl. Hans Ouellette is the media relations officer for the New Brunswick RCMP.
Ouellette said drivers need to be extra vigilant, particularly in residential areas, where there will be more people out and about.
“Especially little children who may be very excited and may temporarily forget the rules of the road when crossing the street,” said Ouellette.
“We’re asking motorists as well to proceed with extra caution when entering and exiting those driveways, backing up, or coming around the corners.”
Trick-or-treaters should add reflective tape to their costumes or carry a flashlight with them in order to be more visible.
Ouellette said they should always use sidewalks and crosswalks whenever possible, and avoid criss-crossing back and forth across the street.
“It’s always best to go up one side of the street at a time and then down the other,” he said.
Other Halloween safety tips from the RCMP include:
- Trick-or-treat in well-known areas with an adult. If you are old enough to be on your own, stay with a group of friends.
- Stay in well-lit areas and only visit well-lit houses.
- Watch for cars pulling out of driveways and backing up.
- Use caution around animals you do not know.
- Have your treats inspected by an adult before eating them so they can throw away any spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious items.
