Government doing best they can to combat homelessness in NS: Houston

The province is focused on getting more housing constructed as the homelessness situation remains out of control.

Premier Tim Houston says it’s heartbreaking to see people living rough, but the government is limited in how much they can do.

“No Nova Scotian likes to see somebody living rough, but we understand there are certain things government can do and there are certain things government can’t do…so we do the things we can do. We invest in shelters, we invest in wrap around supports, we invest in things that are there,” Houston said.

Houston says they look for ways to support people and construct more housing and provide more options.

Houston said he can’t comment on the Municipalities ability to govern itself.

Coming to Lower Sackville are 52 tiny homes. Minister of Community Services, Trevor Boudreau says they are expecting 30 ready for the summer and the final 22, in the fall.

There also 200 Pallet shelters on the way, with orders placed for 100 in HRM and another 100 across the province.

There are currently over 1,000 people living rough in HRM alone.
