The wait is finally over for commercial lobster fishers in southwest Nova Scotia.
After five days of weather delays, dumping day for Lobster Fishing Area 34 is a go for December 2nd.
According to the Coldwater Lobster Association, Saturday’s marine weather forecast looks favourable.
This morning LFA 34 Port Representatives voted unanimously “Yes” in favour of setting their traps Saturday morning.
Dumping day typically is on the last Monday in November.
LFA 33 Update:
It’s been a slow start to lobster fishing season.
Fishers in LFA 33, which covers Shelburne to Cow Bay, began last Sunday.
Dan Fleck with the Brazil Rock 33/34 Lobster Association is looking for things to pick up.
“Catch rates have been down in the offshore, but we just experienced a full moon go by, the tides are strong and there’s been quite a bit of wind. Our fingers are crossed that catches in the offshore are going to rebound quite quickly,” says Fleck.
Catch rates were also down last season, Fleck says it was a poor spring.
He says he’s heard prices of 10 to 11 dollars a pound so far, and hopes that trend continues.
Fleck wishes all fishers a safe and prosperous season.
