Barrington hosts sod-turning ceremony for new recreation centre

A sod-turning ceremony for Barrington’s new recreation centre.

The $8.9 million facility will be built next to the Sandy Wickens Memorial Arena on Sherose Island.

The province contributed $6 million.

Shelburne MLA Nolan Young says a project like this does so much for local residents.

“When you look at recreation in this area, this will be a tool as well for healthcare recruitment and to bring more professionals into the area, which is much needed,” said Young.

The new facility will have brand new multi-purpose room, new recreation spaces and a walking track.

Warden Eddie Nickerson says construction is scheduled to begin April 1st and be completed in one year.

“Not often do you see a project of this magnitude in a small, rural municipality. We have 6,500 people, and it’s something that the community needs,” said Nickerson.

He says they won’t stop there, as the community wants to see a new swimming pool, ball parks and a community health clinic.
