60 displaced, 1 seriously injured after explosion at seniors home in Cape Breton

Nearly 60 people are displaced and one woman seriously injured after what appears to have been an explosion or structural failure at a senior’s complex in Sydney.

Mayor of Cape Breton Regional Municipality, Amanda McDougall took to social media to let residents know of the serious incident that happened around 4 p.m. Friday on Reeves St.

Cape Breton RCMP says the woman injured was taken to hospital.

Emergency crews including Red Cross were on the scene helping residents deal with alternate arrangements.

McDougall says at this time they do not know if the issue was related to the massive snow fall from last weekend.

The Fire Marshal Office is investigating.

Provincial roads had just been cleared, but there are residents that are still stranded after eastern Nova Scotia got pummeled with anywhere between 100 and 150 cm.

The federal Minister of Emergency Preparedness Harjit Sajjan says his ‘thoughts are with those affected by the explosion.’

He adds they will continue to adjust support to meet the community’s needs.
