Connor Hirtle Makes Steady Progress

Rehab is going well according to Connor Hirtle.

The Dublin Shore man says the year since a swimming accident left him paralyzed hasn’t been easy but community support has helped keep his spirits high.

He says with the help of ongoing fundraisers he was able to spend a month at a rehab facility in Regina that had him on his feet regularly.

A feat that isn’t possible at the facility in Halifax.

“In Halifax I spent six or seven months in rehab and I think I stood up maybe once. In Saskatchewan I was standing up every day in treadmills and standing frames.”

Hirtle says standing is important to keep up his muscle tone and bone density.

He says the overwhelming support from the community is what makes it possible for him to get the help he needs.

Hirtle says he hopes to be able to walk again one day and is working hard toward that goal but says he doesn’t plan to spend the rest of his life in a hospital and looks forward to spending time with his friends and family.

Hirtle plans to return to Saskatchewan in the new year to continue the work he began in November.
