Parts of Nova Scotia could see as much as 40 centimetres of snow between Saturday evening and Sunday morning.
A winter storm warning is in effect by Environment Canada.
Meteorologist Tracey Talbot says the snowfall will be accompanied by wind gusts as high as 70 kilometres an hour.
In Lunenburg, Queens and Shelburne Counties, 30 to 40 centimetres are expected,.
Talbot says people should avoid making plans to go anywhere between Saturday night and Sunday morning.
She says there will be a lot of blowing snow and reduced visibility in many areas.
