Former MLA Bill Estabrooks has died

A popular former teacher and New Democratic Party MLA has died.

Bill Estabrooks was 76.

He taught and was a school administrator in the Halifax area for a number of years.

Estabrooks represented the Timberlea-Prospect riding from 1998 to 2013.

He served as a minister for several departments including energy, transportation and infrastructure renewal, plus the Sydney Tar Ponds Agency.

Estabrooks was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2008. In 2013 he retired from politics due to his health concerns.

On X, provincial NDP Leader Claudia Chender said “Estabrooks cared deeply about Nova Scotians, and loved and was loved by the people of Timberlea-Prospect.”

Estabrooks was also a recipient of the Lions International Presidents’ Recognition Award and the Medal of Bravery from the Governor General.
