SPCA urges protection of pets during heat wave

The Nova Scotia SPCA wants you to protect your pets during our current heat wave.

Kevin Strooband, deputy chief inspector says you should never leave your animals in a hot car.

“If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pet. If you’re going out in your car, leave your dogs and cats at home,” said Strooband.

Leaving your pets in distress could result in criminal charges or a fine.

Strooband says at home, make sure your pet has lots of water and a shady spot to go if they’re outside.

“Keep your dog groomed, so that there’s air movement under their fur. You don’t want to shave your pets down, that’s not a fix. It might actually cause them to get a sunburn.”

He says if you see an animal that needs help, report it to the SPCA or the police.
