Trial dates could be set in Shelburne wildfire case

Trial dates could be set for a 22-year-old charged in last year’s massive wildfire in Shelburne County.

Dalton Clark Stewart of Villagedale is due back in court Wednesday morning in Barrington.

He pleaded not-guilty to starting the blaze, which destroyed dozens of structures.

Stewart’s lawyer requested more information from the Crown during last month’s court appearance.

The defense wanted to delay the case until August, but the Crown argued it was too long to wait.

Stewart’s charges under the Forests Act include lighting a fire on privately owned land without permission, failing to take reasonable efforts to prevent the spread of a fire, and leaving a fire unattended.

The massive fire burned for nearly two months.
