Atlantic Herring quota dropping 24 percent: DFO

Another drop in how much Atlantic Herring fishers can land.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is cutting the quota by 24 percent for the 2024-2027 seasons.

In a statement, they say Atlantic herring have been struggling through climate change, leading to smaller herring and less stock.

DFO adds they realize the impact this will have on those employed in the fishery, but it’s necessary to help the stock recover and preserve it for future generations.

Fisheries Minister Diane Lebouthillier says they consulted with industry, stakeholders, rights holders and the provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

The quota has been cut in half since 2018.

Herring is also used as bait in lobster and snow crab fisheries.
