Entangled right whale sighting in Gulf of St. Lawrence

Teams are hoping there will be another sighting of an entangled North Atlantic right whale recently seen in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

A Transport Canada National Aerial Surveillance team spotted it on Wednesday near the Gaspe Peninsula, off Anticosti Island.

Based on observation, the entangled right whale has been confirmed by experts at the New England Aquarium as NARW # 4040, a female right whale known as Chiminea.

Weather permitting, additional flights will be scheduled to try to resight the whale.

There’s no word yet on what type of gear the whale is trapped in.
