N.S. says subscription-based solar garden coming to Cape Breton first for Canada

A subscription-based solar garden is coming to Cape Breton, the first ever in Canada that is run under the government.

The province says it means 555 kilowatts of clean electricity for 29 homes and other buildings at Pine Tree Park Estates -a rental housing development in Sydney.

It will result in a credit on each power bill of $0.02 per kilowatt hour.

Minister Tory Rushton says it’s great news.

“At the end of the day, it’s very important to remember, it’s getting renewable energy onto our grid system.”

It comes after the Community Solar Program was launched earlier this year to help those who can’t install their own panels for reasons like cost, lack of roof space, too much shade, or living in an apartment or condo.

The province spent $475,000 in 2023/24 to help New Dawn Enterprises install the garden and will spend an additional $5.2 million in 2024/25 to help build gardens in other communities.

Each solar garden can produce 0.5 to 10 megawatts of power, only 1 megawatt can power 100 homes for a year.

The solar garden in Sydney is expected to be up and running later this month.
