Lunenburg PC campaign manager resigns over vote-buying allegations

The campaign manager for a Progressive Conservative candidate in Lunenburg is resigning after a decision to hand out gift cards at a local coffee shop.

Peter Zwicker confirmed $51.75 in gift cards were paid for with each worth $2.07 – or the price of a coffee.

They were handed out to customers at a Tim Hortons location on November 9 while Susan Corkum-Greek was campaigning.

Zwicker explained he is stepping down to avoid being a “distraction” and adds Corkum-Greek was unaware of the gift card decision.

Zwicker said the distribution occurred after he had asked the restaurant to allow the campaign to cover coffee for patrons for a 15-minute period, but was informed that the request couldn’t be accommodated.

The matter is now under investigation by Elections Nova Scotia after a complaint was filed by the Liberals over what they say amounts to “vote-buying” tactic.

It could result in serious consequences if confirmed, including candidate disqualification or fines.
