MODL moving forward with plans to restore Centre School site

The Municipality of the District of Lunenburg (MODL) is moving ahead with plans to revitalize the former Centre Consolidated School property. At its December 10 meeting, Council gave the green light for a thorough environmental review of the site to determine what needs to be done to make the property safe for future use.

The review, which will be carried out by Strum Consulting Ltd., is expected to take about six weeks.

It will help identify any contamination on the site and outline the necessary steps for cleanup, which will then be included in the Municipality’s upcoming budget planning.

“This is an important step as we continue to move the site forward,” said Mayor Elspeth McLean-Wile. “While we have tried to sell the property in the past, we’re now focused on cleaning it up so it’s ready for new opportunities that will benefit the community.”

The Centre School property has long been eyed for development. In 2023, the NEST Affordable Living Association (NEST) had proposed turning the site into 100 affordable housing units, but the sale did not move forward.
