Premier Houston applauds temporary border deal with U.S.

Premier Tim Houston describes it as a time to “take a breath”.

He made the comments in relation to a last minute deal between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Donald Trump to avoid heavy taxes on Canadian imports to the United States.

The agreement includes a pause on tariffs and new commitments from Canada in addition to its $1.3-billion border plan.

The latest measures are:

  • appointing a fentanyl czar
  • listing cartels as terrorists
  • ensuring 24/7 eyes on the border
  • launching a Canada-U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering

“We are relieved there will be a pause on tariffs imposed on Canada. President Trump’s tax would have had a very real, immediate negative impact, and I appreciate the dozens of Nova Scotians who shared their personal stories and concerns with me over the last few days.” said Houston. “Because of the pause, our retaliatory measures will not take effect.”

Houston called for all American booze to be pulled off shelves among other measures.

“I want to thank Prime Minister Trudeau for his leadership.”

The pause on tariffs will be in place for at least 30 days.

“The threat of tariffs does remain, and I reaffirm my commitment that as things unfold over the next weeks, Nova Scotia stands in solidarity with our provincial and territorial colleagues.” added Houston.
