Canso man remembered after fishing boat sinks

An old friend of Captain John Baker says he won’t be forgotten.

Baker is one of two men who died after a fishing boat, known as Fortune Pride, capsized near Halifax on Friday.

Philip MacInnis also died due to the incident.

Two other sailors survived and were released from the hospital.

Fin Armsworthy, who represents Canso as a councillor for the Municipality of Guysborough, says he fished with Baker a few decades ago, when the fishing business in Canso was booming.

When he heard the news on Friday, he felt shocked.

“You don’t think things are happening that quick,” says Armsworthy.

He says Baker comes from a tight-knit family who is deeply involved with the Canso fishing community.

He described Baker as “pretty easy going” and a man who “looked after his crew” while he sailed.

The church mentioned him during mass on Sunday, as well, he says.

“It’s a very dangerous job being at sea, and I’d say the sea is unforgivable,” says Armsworthy.

Anyone who sails knows this, he says, and even though Baker was smart and experienced, he knew sometimes things could go wrong.

“This is one those times.”
