Mayors, wardens and councillors are concerned about a new transportation bill.
It would give the province more power over what municipalities can spend on infrastructure.
Yarmouth Mayor Pam Mood is the president of the Nova Scotia Federation of Municipalities.
She says municipalities plan as far as 10 years out, and they’re worried about unexpected costs.
“We can’t run a deficit as a municipality. There is language within that legislation that caused angst in municipal units across the province,” said Mood.
She says they were also worried about municipal autonomy being removed.
The NSFM have requested wording changes to Bill 24 that would take away their worries.
Mood says they’ve had positive meetings with the province, and they understand what they are trying to do, as transportation is very important.
“We are working with them to help re-do some of the wording, and see where we land on that.”
She adds they’ve been reassured the province won’t force municipalities to pay for projects.
