An investment from the federal government to build more homes, faster, on the south shore.
Ottawa announced Monday, it will spend $3.3 million on more than 100 new homes in Bridgewater and $400,000 for 13 units in Mahone Bay, all over the next three years.
The money is through the Housing Accelerator Fund, a $4.4 billion federal initiative that fast tracks building news homes.
MP Kody Blois says they are making progress.
“I think it’s a good day because beyond kind of this technical, political, policy jargon people just want good homes to live in. They want more homes available in their communities. Today’s announcement is going help us get toward that goal.”
Blois says the announcement Monday, goes above and beyond what the town was already planning.
“We have built the most amount of homes in Nova Scotia in 2023 since 1940. We eclipsed that number in 2024 in terms of housing starts. The most amount of housing starts almost in 100 years.”
“I’m a proud Canadian, but proud Nova Scotian as well. So, today is a good day for the types of communities that I used to play junior hockey in. We were in Amherst early this morning, then of course, here at the LCLC.”
He says some of things Bridgewater is committing to is allowing municipally owned land to be available for housing.
Blois adds, removing red tape and focusing on quicker permitting, they will be able to build more units, quicker.
This will help spur the construction of 365 over the next ten years.
