The province is taking the first step to expand cell service in areas where there is no access, affecting a significant number of Nova Scotians.
According to reports, the CEO of Build Nova Scotia, David Benoit told, a Standing Committee Tuesday that there are about 20,000 who do not get service as well as about 1,000 kilometers of primary road.
This includes parts of 100 series highways.
The PC’s launched the Cellular for Nova Scotia Program in 2023 to fund new infrastructure to support the program.
Benoit told MLA’s, the plan is to have the first 20 of 27 existing structures upgraded by the end of this year, and Rogers has been awarded the contract.
Then, they will cover 12,300 civic addresses covering 562 kilometers of road.
Officials said, nearly $63 million has been committed to the project so far.
Construction on the new 27 provincially owned transition towers will be complete by early 2026 and that work is expected to continue into 2027.
