Man charged in largest-ever N.S. wildfire to be sentenced this fall

A man charged in the largest wildfire in Nova Scotia’s history will be sentenced this fall.
Twenty-three-year-old Dalton Clark Stewart did not appear in Shelburne Provincial Court in Barrington Thursday morning, but his lawyer and the Crown agreed on an October 16 sentencing date.
A pre-sentencing hearing will be held on September 11.
The 2023 Barrington Lake wildfire burned over 23,000 hectares and destroyed dozens of homes and structures.
Stewart pleaded guilty to failing to take reasonable effort to prevent a fire from spreading, a charge under the Forests Act.
He pleaded not-guilty to two other charges, including lighting a fire on privately owned land without permission.
