The driver of the other vehicle, a 26-year-old man from Sydney, had life-threatening injuries and died in hospital.

A passenger in one of the vehicles was taken first to Cape Breton Regional Hospital and later airlifted to Halifax in serious condition.

A collision reconstructionist, the forensic identification unit and other police officers will continue investigating.
