Mahone Bay is once again filled with familiar faces and creative displays as the town’s annual Scarecrow Festival takes over the streets.
From Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce to the Wizard of Oz cast and a giant lobster, dozens of larger-than-life figures line sidewalks and storefronts, transforming the seaside community into a fall-themed attraction.

What began years ago as the Great Scarecrow and Antique Show has grown into one of Mahone Bay’s signature events.
The festival is now organized by the town’s Festivals Committee, a non-profit that brings new energy to the event each fall.

Mayor Suzanne Lohnes-Croft said the festival helps extend the tourism season and keep local businesses busy heading into Thanksgiving.“Summer sort of ends and then the scarecrow festival kicks in,” Lohnes-Croft explained. “We do see a considerable amount of traffic, and all week there’s been a lot of foot traffic. It really keeps that steady flow you’d expect in summer going just a little bit longer.”

This year’s event has expanded to three weeks, with scarecrows staying on display through Thanksgiving, weather permitting.
Beyond the displays, the festival also features community events and contests, including a baked beans and brown bread luncheon and a berry pie contest.
The mayor said she’s noticed visitors coming not only from across Nova Scotia but also from other parts of Canada.
Festivalgoers can expect a mix of playful themes and local creativity.

Alongside celebrity lookalikes, characters from books and films, and oversized puffins, the festival also celebrates the community with family-friendly activities, craft vendors, and food specials at local eateries.
Lohnes-Croft said the best way to experience it is simply to take a walk. “Come to Mahone Bay, be prepared to walk. It’s a great town to explore — stop in our shops, eat in our restaurants, and take in all the festivities.”
The Scarecrow Festival continues through the Thanksgiving weekend, with scarecrows displayed throughout the town until mid-October.
