d’Entremont asks Fisheries minister about enforcement in Digby County

Nova Scotia’s only Conservative MP is sounding the alarm on illegal lobster fishing.

In the House of Commons this week, Chris d’Entremont said after six years, the Liberals still have no answers on the activity in St. Mary’s Bay.

He directed a question toward Fisheries minister Joanne Thompson.

“Given the reports of unreported and unregulated fishing in St. Mary’s Bay, what actions or enforcement has your government taken to protect lobster stocks?,” asked d’Entremont.

Thompson said she toured the area in the summer, and the department is ensuring the fishery remains within quotas.

She added they have enforcement when they feel there is unauthorized fishing.

“I am committed to ensuring we have authorized fishing, I want to thank the fisheries officers who have done strong work in enforcement, and I believe we’re seeing the results of that,” said Thompson.

d’Entremont says enforcement should be based on evidence, and not feelings of illegal activity.
