Sports: Mustangs, Hurricanes Lose; Privateers Win

The O’Regan’s Subaru Western Hurricanes fell 4-1 yesterday to the Landworks Gulls. Kurtis Lang scored the lone goal for the local club. The Hurricanes are in Truro today to play the Bearcats.

The Charlie’s Pizza South Shore Mustangs lost 6-3 to the Dartmouth Steele Subaru Major Midgets. Travis Parks, Quinten Johnson and Ryan O’Toole found the back of the net for the Mustangs, who have lost seven in a row. They hope to end the losing skind when they host the Valley Wildcats at 1 p.m at the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre.

In Junior ‘B’ hockey, the Liverpool Privateers dumped the East Hants Penguins 5-1.

The South Shore Lumberjacks are hoping their road magic continues this afternoon in Berwick when they face the Valley Wildcats. The local Junior A hockey club has won six straight contests as the visitors..a streak that’s lasted more than two months. The Jacks and Cats collide at 4 o’clock this afternoon at the Apple Dome.

In the NHL, Ottawa roughed up the Leafs 6-1, Montreal slammed the Oilers 5-1, Winnipeg doubled the Avalanche 4-2, and Calgary beat Vancouver 4-1.

And quarterback Cam Newton is the NFL’s most valuable player this season. Newton, who will lead Carolina against Denver in this evening’s Super Bowl, was also named offensive player of the year.
