The Mayflower Curling Club is rocking in its new arena

The Mayflower Curling Club in Timberlea is open to curlers of all skill levels.

The Club moved locations after decades in the west end of Halifax, in a brand-new $22 million facility.

The President Kirk MacDiarmid shared with our newsroom there’s a great amount of excitement and energy from both old and new curlers coming into the club.

“The new club has really been a boost to the sport of curling in not just Halifax, but sort of the whole province,” he exclaimed.

He says they offer an affordable way for people of all ages to be taught.

Their Learn to Curl program is affordable and runs once or twice a week for six to eight weeks.

“[It’s] great for people of all ages, couples, families, and we’ve had a ton of new interest in the sport through that program, so it’s definitely something I would encourage people to do.”

MacDiarmid says the new arena is modern, bright and accessible.

The building is fully accessible and even offers stick curling, which gives people with mobility issues the ability to play without getting down into the lunge position.

It’s easy to get to with transportation links and offers lots of parking, including some EV charging stations.

“The real sustainability comes from our heat recovery that we use from our ice plant. We reuse the heat that comes off of that equipment to reheat the building,” shared MacDiarmid.

“It’s been designed [to] add solar panels to our roof, which is part of our new federal funding announcement.”

The Club received a $4 million investment from the federal government to increase efficiency and accessibility at the new facility.

“The $4 million really helped us to expand on our path to getting to net zero with solar panels, some additional energy recovery equipment and just to make the building even more than it is already today,” he said.

You can book ice time online or by phone in advance or drop in to play the sport.
