This song, I believe, is Timeless. Every time I hear it, I honestly can’t get enough. It’s incredible. The song is Everybody Wants to Rule the World, and it’s completely hypnotic. The production is excellent, the vocals are amazing, and everything about it just works.
The song was released in 1985 on Songs from the Big Chair by Tears for Fears, during a time when global politics and Cold War tensions were very much in the background of everyday life. That context really comes through in the theme of the song. It was originally going to be called Everybody Wants to Go to War, but the band decided that was a little too dark, even though the message behind it stayed largely the same. It’s an incredible track from start to finish.
On the surface, it’s a catchy, upbeat song, but when you really listen, it’s much darker than it first appears. The song is about the quest for power-how governments and people around the world want to control everything. It explores how that desire for power can lead to misery, especially for those at the very bottom of society.
