Lumberjacks secure first‑round bye as playoffs begin

The South Shore Lumberjacks are heading into the postseason on solid footing after finishing second in their division when the regular season wrapped up Monday.

The placement gives the team a first‑round bye, allowing extra rest and preparation before meeting their yet‑to‑be‑determined Round 2 opponent.

South Shore closed out the season with a 4–3 overtime win against the surging Brookfield Elks in Bridgewater.

Despite being outshot 45–24, Lumberjacks goaltender Kegan Greencorn delivered a standout performance, stopping 42 shots — further supporting his nomination for Top Goaltender in the league’s annual awards.

The offensive spotlight belonged to Owen MacDermid, who recorded a hat trick, scoring all three of South Shore’s goals through two periods.

Brookfield mounted a strong comeback in the third period, led by Bryson Currie, who scored twice, including the tying goal with just 1:40 remaining. But in overtime, it was Luke Crotty who sealed the victory for the 23‑7‑0 Lumberjacks, scoring the game‑winner with 1:27 left.

The Elks, who have shown renewed momentum with a 2‑0‑1 record over their last three outings, will now enter a best‑of‑five preliminary round against the East Hants Penguins.

Meanwhile, the Lumberjacks are turning their attention to Round 2.

Playoff tickets are already on sale, and the team expects to release its full postseason schedule later this week.

South Shore is also being recognized league‑wide, earning three award nominations:

  • Top Executive
  • Top Goaltender – Kegan Greencorn
  • Top Defenceman – Leo MacLean
