Tensions Easing At Lunenburg Town Council

Tensions at Lunenburg Town Council seem to be simmering down.

After weeks of debate between councillor Brian Davis and the rest of town council around their use of in-camera meetings, an understanding has been reached.

Davis says he spoke with Mayor Rachel Bailey and she has agreed to have a representative from the Department of Municipal Affairs to come and speak with council.

Davis says change isn’t always easy.

“I really want to apologize for this part of the chaos. However, often, you have to go from past procedures to chaos. The important thing is how we move ahead from here.”

Davis says he wants to hold council to a high standard.

“The main thrust of what I’m trying to work towards is this change of a more open and transparent governance in the Town of Lunenburg.”

Davis feels having a member Municipal Affairs available to answer questions will help him determine for himself if council is acting according to the Municipal Government Act.

Meanwhile,

Mayor Bailey says she is hoping to have a representative from the Department of Municipal Affairs at the Municipal Law information session being held on Thursday.

“We had an excellent education session for our council last week. We’ve asked both our lawyer Patrick Burke – partnering with Peter Rogers from McInnes Cooper, and they’re going to put on the workshop for the community.”

Bailey hopes people will take advantage of the opportunity to learn more about how and why council operates as it does.

“Our citizens will have the opportunity to hear what we did and to get the understanding that we have.”

Bailey hopes the session will clear up concerns some residents have had around how council operates.

The presentation gets underway at 7:00pm Thursday at Lunenburg Town Hall.
