Decision To Be Made On Big Tancook Island Elementary School

Decision day is looming for Big Tancook Island Elementary School.

The future of the one-room schoolhouse will come to a vote on Wednesday afternoon.

The South Shore Regional School Board will decide its fate.

The school options committee conducted the review and recommends keeping it open.

Chairperson Hillary Dionne says the school is the heart of the island.

“If we don’t have a school here anymore, it’s going to limit the growth of our little island community because chances are there won’t be too many families looking to move here.”

She says other families may move to the island, depending on Wednesday’s vote.

Dionne says there is concern for kids taking the ferry, if the school closes.

“Sometimes the ocean is rough, there is always freight being loaded off and on, the wharves here are basically cargo and loading zones. The kids would have to navigate that.”

Dionne adds, the ferry schedule doesn’t match the timetable for Chester District Elementary and students would always be late.

A special board meeting will be held at Chester District.
