Lunenburg Invites Councils To Explore Other Restructuring Options

The Town of Lunenburg is extending an invitation to four councils along with the Village of Chester and the Nova Scotia Utility And Review Board to discuss municipal restructuring options.

The idea comes from a recent meeting of the Municipal Governance Review Committee.

Mayor Rachel Bailey says amalgamation seems to be the only option under review.

But says there are other ideas that need exploring.

“I’m very concerned about large amalgamated bodies serving the purpose that municipal government is supposed to serve,” said Bailey

Bailey says it’s important all municipal council members represented on the Municipal Governance Review Committee receive the same information.

And adds the town is prepared to walk away from the committee if councils can not come to a consensus.

“We’re not going to drop altogether the idea of looking at other options.”
