Foundation Donates $4-million to Transform Palliative Care in Nova Scotia

A $4-million donation is expected to transform palliative care in Nova Scotia.

The donation, from the Murphy family through the J & W Murphy Foundation, will see $3-million help create an Endowed Chair in Palliative Care.

That position will be dedicated to leading palliative care research at the QEII.

Dr. David Henderson, Senior Medical Director of the Nova Scotia Health Authority’s Integrated Palliative Care Program, says the research component is huge.

“There is not a lot of dollars that go towards research for palliative care needs. It’s really looking at how best we can support families and patients living with a life-threatening illness.”

The other $1-million will go towards Nova Scotia’s new hospice residence, Hospice Halifax.

Henderson says the donation will have a major impact.

“Having the ability to do some good focused research on caring for all of us when we have a condition that’s going to end our lives is incredible.”

The Foundation was created by William Murphy – co-founder of Mersey Seafoods Limited in Liverpool – and his wife, Janet.
