Chances Are… Maybe?

You can’t help but notice them. Wild daisies are popping up all over the place.

They area nice looking flower, but how many petals do they have?

It’s an important question that has led to the destruction of many a daisy as humans try to figure out whether or not someone loves them. Apparently, this has origins in France, where it can not only be just a matter of yes or no, but also include whether someone loves you a little or a lot.

But it made me question whether or not we really had to do this as children. I mean, aren’t all daisies pretty much the same?

The short answer would be no. There are a lot of daisies. The game is played usually with an ox-eye daisy, which generally have between 15 and 40 white petals. That’s a pretty wide range, so you can’t just say all daisies have an even number of petals so the answer will be “not love” on a regular basis.

Although there was a count done on a species of cultivated daisy that showed they generally have a count of 42 petals, which would tend to give a negative answer to the big question.

But it would seem daisies are unpredictable in the number of petals they produce, so the answer at the end of the game is still to be determined.

Not that it really matters, but I was wondering whether or not countless daisies have met their end over time for no good reason. Although it is an interesting way to pass the time, too bad there wasn’t some other way to tell.

Like… counting the petals?
