Stoney Island Beach To Have Lifeguard Service

A Shelburne County beach will have lifeguard service for the first time.

Stoney Island Beach on Cape Sable Island was identified by the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service last summer for supervision.

Barrington Recreation Coordinator Misty James says it’s a moderate risk beach.

“There is potential for risk, but it’s also quite heavily used. It’s seen some upgrades over the years. There’s also an endangered population of piping plovers there, so to have the lifeguard supervision is there is very important to the municipality,” said James.

James says this will allow for more programming at the beach, including day camps every Friday.

“Now we can let the kids in the water there, we are planning some beach bashes there once restrictions are lifted, hopefully later this summer, and we can do even more.”

Service will start June 30th, and lifeguard will be on duty from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week all summer.
