Last night my wife and I were looking for something to watch and chose the third in the John Wick movie franchise – Parabellum. About a third of the way in, I realized that it was just the same story as the previous two. I stopped watching and chose to turn in early.
That’s a real problem for me these days – Hollywood knows we like the familiar, so it they have a hit, they try to turn it into a franchise and keep releasing more movies featuring the same characters and lore.
But I totally get it – a lot of the movies I have watched multiple times are part of franchises – the Star Treks, the Star Wars, the Die Hards and Lethal Weapons.
However, the best movies I’ve seen over and over were standalones – The Big Chill, The Breakfast Club, Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump and Saving Private Ryan.
