It’s summer and I remember my summer vacations as a kid and all the things we did that you can’t do anymore.
First, the drive to my grandparent’s farm north of Truro – I always rode in the very back of the family station wagon – no seats, no seatbelts.
When we got to the farm my brother and I would roam the fields and woods for miles without parental supervision.
We swam in the creek alone when we were just little kids.
We rode on the top of the stacked haywagon and never fell off.
We went everywhere in the bed of my grandfather’s pickup truck.
I played in the hayloft and only fell through the floor once.
My brother and I never went in the farmhouse for a drink. We drank from the hose for the livestock.
We also got addicted to licking the animal’s salt licks.
We climbed everything – the sawdust mountains at the sawmill, the wood pile, and got on the roof of every outbuilding on the farm, including the barn.
Best summer vacations ever! And we survived!
What crazy things did you do as a kid that the kids today would never do?
