Arrest Made In 2020 Pubnico Fish Plant Fire

A 24 year old man from East Pubnico has been charged with arson, nine months after a fish plant was destroyed.

Brendon Douglas James Porter was arrested Wednesday without incident, and held in custody until his court appearance yesterday.

He was released on strict conditions, and will next appear in Shelburne Provincial Court on August 25th.

The plant in Middle West Pubnico burned to the ground on October 16th, 2020.

Investigators determined it was arson, and identified a suspect in the incident.

Just days earlier at the location, the fish plant was the site of a clash between Indigenous and commercial fishers, as tensions were high over an Indigenous moderate livelihood fishery in St. Mary’s Bay.

Yarmouth Rural RCMP say the investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information on the fire or the identities of the persons of interest can contact them or Crime Stoppers.
