Talking To The Animals

A lot of people talk to their pets. But do your pets talk back?

No, I don’t expect them to be fully proficient in any actual human language, but that might not stop them from trying.

I’ve only had a couple dogs. Well, three. Two were not great talkers. They might give a bark if I said something they agreed with or were particularly excited about something, But mostly they didn’t say much. My present dog does mutter at me occasionally.

It’s sort of funny, really. If I’m slow to open a door for her, or maybe not quite fast enough with the food bowl, I get a sort of mumbling, grumbling sound from the dog. Maybe I don’t get the exact words, but you can tell she is not happy with my performance.

Cats I have had seem to be more vocal. My first cat was extremely vocal. He would seem to comment on just about everything. He would even go on walks with us. The dog would be on a leash. The cat would be following along, usually complaining because we didn’t wait while he was off exploring along the way. Or if he was somehow thinking my performance, once again, was not up to his standards, he was never shy about letting me know.

There have been a few other cats that were also great talkers, but not quite as good as that first one. Until the present cat.

This cat likes to let me know how she feels about everything. This seems to be a specialty of hers, especially at hours I would rather the cat not be making noises. My opinion is of no consequence to the cat, however.

Lately, around 5:00 AM or so, the cat will wake up and come to where I am sleeping. I am not awake at 5:00 AM. Yes, it is a lovely time of day, but I would just as soon skip it. I enjoy sleep. The cat, since she can sleep pretty much all day, when I’m not around, has other priorities.

Anyway, the cat will find me at around 5:00 and stick her face very close to mine. The feeling that something is watching you tends to disturb my sleep, and as soon as one eyelid so much as flutters, the cat starts to tell me her plans for the day.

I believe I am informed about the fact that the birds are up, and I should be as well, that her dish could use being topped up and that her litter box could use being cleaned, and anything else she can think of. As with most cats, she has come to accept me as her servant and tends to give me extensive lectures at very early hours as to what she expects of me throughout the day.

I also get constant reminders throughout the day.

Really, the cat seems to talk to me far more than I talk to her. I only wish I knew what she was saying. Or maybe I don’t want to know.
