Scouts May Return To Queens

Young people in Queens County may soon get a chance to join the Scouts once again.

Dave Wightman, deputy council commissioner for the Nova Scotia Provincial Council, has been involved with Scouts for years.

He recently moved to the area and discovered there hasn’t been Scouts in Queens for several years.

Wightman says Scouts has evolved over the years, giving youth more freedom to learn new skills or get out in the woods.

“Scouting has in the last couple of years, taken on a bit of a turn called the Canadian Path to really have a push for the movement to be youth led.”

Of course it has to be within reason.

“I’m just the advisor here that has to make sure you’re not bungee jumping off the Tim Hortons roof,” he laughs.

“The older kids, really going up to young adults into the Rover age group because that goes up to 26 now, you can do really anything from multiple day winter camps, survival skills.”

Scouts are also co-ed and boys and girls are both encouraged to sign up.

A community meeting to measure interest is set for 7 pm, October 25 at Queens Place Emera Centre.
