South Shore Regional Hospital is moving forward on their new look.
EXP Architects from Halifax have been awarded the design contract which is budgeted up to $4.77 million dollars.
The project involving renovating and expanding the emergency department, endoscopy unit and day surgery unit, as well as the addition of a 12-seat dialysis unit was announced in 2017.
The hospital’s Emergency Department Medical Director Greg McNally says the changes are a long time coming.
“We know right now we’ve outgrown our space probably a decade or two ago. We make do with the structure we have, but we know in the future we’re going to need enhancements to that to address health care needs of people on the South Shore.”
Lunenburg West MLA Mark Furey says he’s encouraged to see the project moving forward.
“It really has been a very impressive fluid process for people to come together. There’s been a lot of doubt about this project. This project has been talked about for twelve to fifteen years.”
Furey expects the design to be ready and shovels in the ground by the end of 2019.
