Messy Weather Prompts School Closures

It arrived later than expected but a winter storm has made its way to the South Shore.

Snow started falling in Shelburne and Queens just after 2 a.m. before reaching Lunenburg County roughly an hour later.

The Department of Transportation tweeted that all their trucks have been dispatched.

Environment Canada says total snow and ice pellet amounts are expected to reach 10 centimetres in Shelburne and Yarmouth counties. A wind warning is in effect in those regions with gusts up to 100 km/h.

In Queens, 10-15 centimetres of snow is expected before changing to ice pellets and rain. A blowing snow advisory is in effect for that region.

In Lunenburg County, 15-25 centimetres of snow and ice pellets are expected by late this afternoon with wind gusting to 80 km/h.

As a result, all schools are cancelled in the South Shore and Tri-Counties.

The NSCC Lunenburg Campus as well as Shelburne and Burridge campuses are also closed today.
