Coast Guard Working To Remove Grounded Vessel

The Canadian Coast Guard is working to remove a fishing vessel that was grounded in Lunenburg Harbour earlier this week.

The boat went aground April 3 after it dragged anchor during high winds.

It had been previously been moored in the harbour.

Ben MacDonald is the acting deputy superintendent of environmental response with the Canadian Coast Guard.

“The Canadian Coast Guard worked with the owner, however he was unwilling and unable to respond so the Canadian Coast Guard assumed command of the incident,” he says. “We retained a contract with a private company to pump the pollutants of the vessel as well as salvage.”

The Coast Guard, along with the salvage company, is doing a damage assessment of the vessel.

As of Friday they were unsure of the status of the vessel and whether it was able to float.

MacDonald says they’ll work with the salvage company throughout the weekend to mitigate the environmental impacts on the harbour.

They’re also still in contact with the owner and working through next steps.
