A little school already known for its initiatives has added a new one to the list.
Students who take the school bus to and from Petite Riviere Elementary School can now grab a book as they hop on the bus.
The Books on The Bus program was initiated by the School Advisory Council.
Principal Scott Rawding says it’s been a hit with kids and bus drivers.
“The bus drivers have been very supportive, they find the kids are more settled … not that there’s been major issues on the bus but we know that bus driving is a difficult job to have.”
Rawding says it’s a great way to continue student engagement, even on the way home.
“They’re all discovery books, engagement books, books of really mostly pictures but they’re still enjoying them and still being engaged.”
The books aren’t lengthy as Rawding says they wanted to be sure no one got sick reading them.
He says they’re looking at buying new books in the near future, so kids don’t get bored.
Some of the students spend about 50 minutes on the bus as Petite Riviere encompasses students from as far away as Vogler’s Cove.
The program was piloted about three months ago on one bus and has been full implemented on all three buses for about a month.
