More municipal units in the region have added their support to those already calling on government to have radiation treatment in Yarmouth.
In Yarmouth County, the three municipal units are all supporting having radiation therapy at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital.
It was discussed at a joint council meeting recently with the town of Yarmouth and the municipalities of Argyle and Yarmouth.
The three join a growing list of municipal units across the region that support an initiative from the Western Nova Scotia Cancer Support Network.
Town councillor Sandy Dennis, a lung cancer survivor, says the councils also agreed they would like to meet with Nova Scotia’s chief radiologist.
“To have Minister Churchill invite Dr. Bethune to meet with our joint council. It was also suggested that we invite the chamber (Yarmouth and Area Chamber of Commerce) to the meeting as well. We would like to speak with Dr. Bethune to let him know why our local governments feels that radiation therapy would be so beneficial to this end of the province.”
Dr. Bethune is heading up a study into the feasibility of having a linear accelerator in Yarmouth.
The mayor and council of the Town of Clark’s Harbour sent a letter to Janet Knox, the CEO of the Nova Scotia Health Authority stating support for full radiation therapy in Yarmouth.
In her letter of response Knox wrote that the feasibility of having a linear accelerator in Yarmouth had been explored on many occasions and to this point, it has not found to be feasible.
